99% of Zimbabwean workers are still living below poverty level

Lovemore Matombo, President of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), in an interview with Radio Labour, said that, despite a marked improvement in people's lives following the signing of the Global Political Agreement (GPA), the disposal income of 99% of the workers still remained below the poverty level.

He recognized that there had been a dramatic change in terms of the availability of food and that bread had ceased to be 'an exclusive right' of the authorities. 'Overnight, supermarkets were full', said the ZCTU President who also pointed to the turnaround in price increases from hyperinflation to deflation.
