The TUC Aid Appeal launched in January 2009 in the wake of the Israeli offensive in Gaza has played a key role in mobilising trade unions and their members to encourage donations for emergency relief of the people affected by the events. The first consignment of supplies organised by International Transport Federation (ITF) Arab World Office in collaboration with the Jordanian General Trade Union of Workers in Air Transport and Tourism and Royal Jordanian Airlines reached Gaza on 8 January 2009. The emergency supplies included three ambulances, medical supplies, food and water. The second consignment consisting of relief supplies airlifted by ITF arrived in Egypt towards the end of January and was handed over to the Red Crescent. A third trade union aid consignment from ITF including tents, blankets and hospital cots for new-born babies arrived in Gaza by road in the last week of February as part of a Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization aid convoy.
