On Saturday 25 October the CGIL demonstrated against the government’s proposal to weaken employment rights. The proposed amendments to the Workers’ Statute (in place for 40 years) would remove the right of workers who have been fired unfairly to be reinstated.
Whilst the SERTUC Regional Council met, one million Italian workers demonstrated against the measures and we sent solidarity greetings to our comrades in CGIL Rome.
“We want work for everyone, and work with rights. This is a demonstration for those without work, without rights, those who suffer, who have no certainties for the future,” Susanna Camusso, general secretary of the CGIL, told the crowds. “We are here and we’re not going away. We will strike, and use all our strength to fight to change this government’s policies,” she said, announcing the unions would hold another demo on November 8. Prime Minister Renzi’s measures “are not sufficient to change the path Italy is on,” she added.
