Call for suspension of Honduran trade preferences

Dear Cathy

Suspension of Honduras' GSP+ status

The TUC strongly condemns the military coup in Honduras and urge the EU to take all possible action to help restore democracy, including suspending its GSP+ trade preferences.

The coup poses a serious risk to human and trade union rights, with attacks on journalists and protestors already documented, as well as the suspension of many fundamental human rights under the military's declared state of emergency. We therefore welcome steps taken by the EU and Member States, including the withdrawal of Ambassadors and the postponement of the round of EU-Central America negotiations due this week. To apply more pressure, the Commission should also suspend GSP+ trade preferences to Honduras until there is a total return to democracy.

Yours sincerely,

BRENDAN BARBER

General Secretary
