Issue date

A World AIDS Day Seminar

'I want to live my rights in the Workplace'

9.30-12.30, Tuesday 1 December 2009

Congress House, Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3LS

'AIDS is a workplace issue not only because it affects labour and productivity, but also because the workplace has a vital role to play in the wider struggle to limit the spread and effects of the epidemic' - ILO/AIDS

Trade unions are making a critical contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS through workplace action. They have been in the forefront in protecting and promoting the employment and human rights of workers and their communities affected by the pandemic. Trade unions have also played a vital role in the drafting of the new ILO recommendation on HIV/AIDS and the World of Work to be finalised at the ILO Conference in 2010. The TUC and affiliates, for their part, are working hand in hand with their colleagues in combating stigma and discrimination associated with the disease in Africa - Ghana, Nigeria and Uganda, in particular.

This seminar will highlight and celebrate the role of trade unions in defending the interests and rights of affected colleagues and their communities and explore ways of enhancing their achievements.

The event will bring together key players involved in workplace action, policy making and campaigning and speakers from DFID, trade unions and NGOs will focus on best practice in the workplace and what challenges lie ahead.

The theme of World Aids Day 2009 is 'I want to live my rights,' the issue of HIV/AIDS has not gone away, there are many things that still can be and should be done to ensure that those affected can live their rights in the workplace.
