TUC Aid is working with the ITUC to help protect and promote trade union and human rights in Guinea-Conakry.

Guinea-Conakry's trade union movement has played a critical role in civic opposition to corruption and the Government's onslaught on human rights.

Earlier this year, following a demonstration held in support of a general strike, security forces resorted to brutal repression, which estimates suggest resulted in over 100 deaths and left hundreds injured. The buildings housing national union centres were also attacked by security forces and offices ransacked, with valuable office equipment being destroyed or stolen.

The ITUC are co-ordinating development assistance in capacity building and material support (office equipment, mobile phones, transport etc) - with a view to strengthening union structures, institutions and networks in Guinea. Trade union officials in Guinea are in urgent need of training in labour code, social protection, wage policies, ILO standards etc, to help them become more effective in their work.
