Help unions restore democracy in Honduras

Issue date

Support the TUC Aid - Honduras appeal

Trade unions in Honduras have been at the forefront of the struggle to restore democracy in their country, since the military coup in late June. They've also been in the firing line. Many have been killed, imprisoned or tortured. They urgently need our support.

'The repression of coup opponents has claimed over 20 lives,' notes Erasto Reyes, one of the protest leaders. 'Another 500 have been injured and 3000 have been arrested. Twelve of those killed were trade unionists. Some were killed in their homes, others during demonstrations held in protest against the coup.'

Donations can be made either by visiting TUC Aid or by sending a cheque for TUC Aid - Honduras Appeal, addressed to TUC Aid, TUC Congress House, Great Russell Street, London, WC1B 3LS.

'Twelve of those killed were trade unionists'

This appeal is part of an international appeal launched by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), following a union solidarity mission to Honduras in the weeks following the coup. All proceeds will be forwarded to the Confederación Unitaria de Trabajadores de Honduras - one of the Honduran national trade union centres affiliated to the ITUC.

The TUC is also pushing on the UK government and the European Union to put more pressure on the regime. It calls on them to suspend trade preferences to the regime, originally granted to the previous democratic government of Honduras for implementing fundamental human and labour rights, under the EU's GSP+ scheme.
