TUC Congress support for Colombian unions

Congress warmly welcomed Carlos Rodriguez, President of the CUT, Colombia, with the longest standing ovation of the conference. Carlos - one of Colombia's strongest advocates for peace and social justice - explained recent trade union and political and economic developments in Colombia, and relayed the news of yet another brutal murder of a member of the foodworkers' union, Sinaltrainal, the 33rd Colombian trade unionist killed this year.

Carlos Rodriguez thanked the TUC for its strong solidarity and practical support this year especially in helping to win agreement in the ILO for a high-level tripartite mission to visit the country. Carlos met numerous affiliated unions during his visit, held a bilateral meeting with Brendan Barber and Frances O'Grady and attended a meeting of the Justice for Colombia National Committee to discuss solidarity priorities - stressing the need for the CUT to build its information technology and communications capacity.

The TUC will be exploring with Justice for Colombia and the CUT how best to respond. In another step towards trade union unity the CUT and the ICFTU-affiliated CTC, with which the TUC also maintains the closest of relationships are engaged in merger talks. A further TUC delegation, to be led by Sally Hunt, General Council spokesperson on international affairs is scheduled to visit Colombia in December.
