Issue date

In April 2013, the Rana Plaza textile factory collapsed in Savar district, Bangladesh killing almost 1,200 people, mostly young women.  It was the worst industrial disaster in the country’s history.

It has been estimated that £24 million needs to be raised to cover the medical and social assistance needed for the workers of Rana Plaza and their families – including over 800 children left orphaned.

In January 2014, the Rana Plaza Trust Fund was created by global unions, employers and the government in Bangladesh and managed by the International Labour Organisation. The Trust Fund is a ‘no-fault fund’ to which any organisation can contribute.

TUC Aid has contributed £16,000 ($26,919) to the Fund from donations from our affiliated unions - see our donation publicly listed on the Fund's Donors page here.

The TUC is calling on all companies sourcing from Bangladesh and the UK and Bangladesh government to contribute adequately  to the fund  so the victims of the disaster and their families can start to rebuild their lives.

The TUC has written to DFID calling on the UK government to match fund donations to the Rana Plaza Donors Trust Fund - see here.
