Nine houses built in collaboration with the Free Trade Zones /General Services Employees' Union (FTZGSEU) were handed over to their beneficiaries at a ceremony held on 31 December 2006, bringing the number of houses for Tsunami victims funded by TUC Aid in Sri Lanka to 17. A Joint Committee consisting of three women from the Women's Centre and three men from the Union were in charge of the Housing Programme implemented through the American Centre for International Labour Solidarity (ACILS) in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The construction of houses for people coming to terms with the consequences of the disaster was part of the TUC Aid Tsunami Relief Programme in Sri Lanka. In addition to building houses, TUC Aid has already funded Counselling Services and Health Clinics, vocational training, distribution of household and transport items, provision of material and financial support and purchase of office equipment for affected trade unions in Sri Lanka.
