The TUC has welcomed Government proposals to boost the quality of bus services and tackle traffic congestion in cities in today's draft Local Transport Bill.
TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: 'The Government's draft bill is a once in a generation opportunity to secure high quality, well regulated bus services in the public interest.
'We also welcome plans to ring-fence the revenues raised from local road-pricing schemes to fund bus service improvements. However, it is essential that these measures are accompanied by a step change in working conditions. Transport staff need and deserve high quality working conditions that match the quality bus services the Government is seeking.
'Together these changes will make a major contribution to tackling our carbon emissions from road transport.'
