SERTUC supports PCS Reps at the Victoria and Albert Museum

Issue date

PCS

SERTUC was pleased to support PCS reps at the Victoria and Albert Museum on Friday 29 August, when they targeted  the late opening of the Museum’s ‘Disobedient Objects’ exhibition. Union reps leafleted members of the public as they arrived and urged those speaking at the event to mention and support the struggle for a fair pay rise for V&A workers, during their lectures. Officers from SERTUC’s Creative and Leisure Industries Committee, Tom Taylor and Alice Dupont, joined the lobby.

V&A workers have experienced a real terms drop in wages of ten per cent in just 3 years. One V&A staff member said, "This sort of pay cut is pushing staff at the V&A towards working poverty when London rent prices, transport costs and the cost of food are increasing."

The exhibition explores the powerful role that objects play in grassroots movements for social change, so organising a lobby for fair pay was smart and well targeted.

We hope that the Museum’s Director, Professor Martin Roth, appreciates the irony and recognises the principle of fair pay for the Museum’s workforce.
