embargo: For immediate release

Commenting on a statement released today (Thursday) by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) statement warning nurses and midwives about taking industrial action, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:

'Every TUC union considering industrial action on 30 November is committed to working with local employers to ensure emergency cover and patient safety is protected.

'With this in mind the fears expressed by the NMC are unfounded and unwarranted, and for the NMC to raise these issues - without any consultation with the unions concerned - before ballots have even opened, is a serious misjudgement.'
