ePubWhat is an ePub file?

Unlike pdfs, ePubs are designed to reflow content, meaning that the text display is optimised for the particular display device used by the reader. They work on PCs; Macs, iPads, iPhones; iPod Touch; Android phones; and tablets.

How to read an ePub on Android devices

  1. Get an ePub  reader. The simplest and easiest is the Google Play Books app, which is already pre-installed on most Android devices. If you can’t see it in your list of apps search for it in the Play Store and install it.
  2. Adjust the settings. Tap the Play Books icon on your app screen to open it. Tap the menu symbol ≡ at the top of the app, tap “settings” and place a check next to “Enable PDF uploading.” This makes it possible to add both pdf and ePub files.
  3. Get the ePub  file onto your device. If it is already on your work or home computer email it to your Android. With the email open tap the attachment and choose a download (rather than open) option. This will place the ePub  into your downloads folder on your device.  If you use your device’s browser to download it from the TUC website the file should end up in the same download folder on your device.
  4. Upload to PlayBooks. Find the download folder on your device (it may be inside another called Files or My Files). That emailed ePub  should be showing. Tap the ePub and the file will either upload directly to Play Books or an option to upload to Play Books will appear.
  5. Start reading! When the book is finished uploading to Play Books, you’ll see the cover of it in your library. Tap it to start reading. Tap near the top of the screen to see a contents list, access the controls over type size, distances between lines, choice of typeface etc. and to access the menu. To turn pages tap the right or left hand edges of your screen, or swipe across. From now on, you can open the ePub  at any time from the Play Books app on your device.

    • Or get the file by using your device’s browser to download it from the TUC website. You will be asked whether you want open it in iBooks. Again the book will open and be added to your iBooks collection. From now on, you can open the ePub  from the iBooks app on your device.
  3. Start reading! You’ll see the cover of it in your iBooks library. Tap it to start reading. Tap near the top of the screen to see a contents list, access the controls over type size, distances between lines, choice of typeface etc. and to access the menu. To turn pages tap the right or left hand edges of your screen, or swipe across. From now on, you can open the ePub at any time from the iBooks app on your device.
