Disability history month is very important to me because every year it reminds me of why I’m so proud to self-identify as disabled.
Colleen

It celebrates the achievements of disabled people and highlights the journey we have made together towards inclusion.I’m extremely proud to represent disabled members on the Executive of the NEU National Education Union. I work hard to promote the idea of a diverse workforce for education.

I want them to feel like collectively they are a force to be reckoned with. Indeed all education professionals are in the best place to teach our young people about the importance of disability equality.

I want members to feel empowered so they can seek adjustments they need to help them stay in work.

During Disability History Month I often remember the direct action that took place in Birmingham where disabled people demanded proper access to buses. Today in Birmingham there are ‘kneeling‘ buses which are accessible to everyone.
