TUC calls for UK trade preferences to promote workers' rights

Key findings

The TUC has submitted evidence to the government consultation on its new trade preference scheme which will give tariff free access to certain goods from middle and lower income countries.

The TUC’s submission highlights the need for the scheme to be conditional on respect for fundamental labour standards and the promotion of the UN Sustainability Goals.

The TUC calls for the government to fully involve trade unions in the design and monitoring of its new trade preference scheme.

The submission calls for unilateral trade preferences for middle and low income countries to replace trade deals the government has pressured countries such as Ghana and Kenya to sign.  These trade deals threaten to increase insecure work and exploitation, particularly of women workers and undermine domestic industries in middle and low income countries.
