Is my occupational health provider accredited?

Issue date

If your employer uses an occupational health provider for any purpose, it is important that you and your members know that they are up to the job. The TUC has issued separate advice on how to check if a doctor is appropriately qualified, but if you have a company providing occupational health services you may not know who the doctors, or other health care providers are.

There is however an accreditation scheme that employers can check. It is called SEQOHS. This stands for Safe, Effective, Quality, Occupational Health Service and is a set of standards and a voluntary accreditation scheme for occupational health services and occupational health physiotherapist practices. SEQOHS accreditation is formal recognition that an occupational health service provider has demonstrated that it has the competence to deliver against the measures in the SEQOHS standards, one of which is the relationship with workers.

If your occupational health provider is accredited by SEQOHS then it helps give a guarantee that their occupation doctors, nurses and physiotherapists are qualified in occupational health and also that they have been regularly audited to ensure that it meets the necessary standards. A searchable list of occupational health and occupational health physiotherapy services that have achieved SEQOHS accreditation can be found here

There are several hundred accredited providers and the TUC recommends that all employers should ensure that they only use an accredited provider. If your employer is using a provider on the list then you should ask them why not. Employers do not always use an occupational health provider for a full range of services and some occupational health providers are only accredited for certain parts of the standard so you should always check the certificate to check what they are accredited to do, not just whether they are on the list. To verify what services a provider is accredited to provide you should download the certificate by clicking on the date at the side of their name.

A list of services working towards SEQOHS accreditation (services that have registered with SEQOHS and have not yet demonstrated they have met the standards) can be found here
