A fairer deal on migration

EU migrants in the UK contribute about £2bn a year more in taxes than they get back, but that money isn’t being shared fairly. A new government programme will provide local communities with just £25m a year – just over 1% of the net amount EU migrants are contributing. Instead, the TUC is calling on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to use the Autumn Financial Statement to increase those sums considerably, so that local communities affected most by EU migration get funding that they can use to relieve pressures on the NHS, schools and housing, tackle exploitation and undercutting better, and promote community cohesion. The TUC report sets out what local communities could use a properly resourced Migration Impacts Fund to deliver, and also argues that the best people to decide how the Fund is spent locally are the people who live there.
