Commenting on today’s announcement that Lancashire is to enter into tier 3 restrictions, Lynn Collins TUC North West Regional Secretary said:

“It’s important that financial support is available to protect people’s jobs. That’s why we’ve been calling on government to pay furlough at 80% of wages, a more generous short time working scheme for those businesses that can stay open but are hit by local restrictions and additional help for self-employed workers. This week we wrote directly to all Lancashire’s MP’s to support our calls.

“Tens of thousands of workers will be employed in those sectors mandated to close and won’t be getting the support they need. Other sectors will be feeling the impact of these same restrictions on their jobs and businesses with no additional help available.

“We hope that the financial support for business of around £30million which has been announced will be targeted to support workers in those businesses.

“But today’s announcement raises further questions about why the government is not providing the support needed at the outset. Areas shouldn’t have to negotiate for help  -  the promise of ‘whatever it takes’ is needed now more than ever.”
