Government needs to boost growth as East Midlands economy continues to struggle, says TUC

Commenting on today’s (Monday) Official for National Statistics economic figures, TUC Midlands Regional Secretary Lee Barron said:

“These figures show that the East Midlands economy was the hardest hit English region in the first quarter of 2020, with the economy shrinking by over 4%.

“The impact of Covid-19 pandemic will only have exacerbated the problems facing our economy.

“We need urgent action from the government through a boost to the minimum wage, investment in infrastructure and skills and sector specific recovery plans for sectors like aerospace and automotive that are so crucial for our region.

“The East Midlands is hurting. We’ve published a report outlining how we can build a better recovery for the East Midlands by investing in jobs, creating a better framework for work and rebuilding our public services. Today’s figures again show why ministers need to urgently work with unions and businesses to both safeguard jobs now and to build back better’.
