Responding to David Cameron’s plans to cut benefits and welfare for 18- to 21-year-olds announced today (Monday) TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“Young people are already facing a historic living standards squeeze. But instead of dealing with these problems the PM wants to make life even tougher for those in the greatest need.

“If the PM really wanted to end youth unemployment he would stop taking services and support away from young people – forcing people to work for free is not the answer.

“Many young people claiming housing benefit have young families of their own to care for, and three quarters of those affected by the benefit cap are children. Making their lives even harder will reduce their future life chances, not improve them.”
