Overview

Come and hear how Brazilian workers and their allies are fighting for democracy, “for civilisation”, and for the freedom of Lula.

About this Event

The workers of Brazil knew what was coming long before the rest of the country. A concerted assault on the rights of workers paved the way for the election of the far right demagogue Jair Bolsonaro, who has used his position as president to rewrite the history of Brazil’s military dictatorship and to fuel hate crime with his racism, homophobia and misogynism.

Speakers

Chaired by Mariela Kohon, Senior International Officer, TUC

  • Union leader Antonia Lisboa de Vale, the international secretary of Brazil’s biggest union organisation, the Central Workers’ Union (CUT). The union movement remains at the core of resistance, with 45 million workers striking in June and unions active on the streets and in workplaces.
  • Danielle Rowley MP, the Shadow Minister for Climate Justice and Green Jobs, who will talk about the need for climate justice and how the far right poses a crucial threat, as shown by the rampant deforestation revealed in Brazil this summer.
  • Speaker TBC - will speak of the international solidarity needed to defend the Brazilian people’s rights in the face of racism, misogyny and homophobia.
