Save Phoenix House

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is planning to close Phoenix House in Barrow, a site which processes specialist claims for work-related illness. Help us protect this vital service and save the jobs of those delivering it.
Our objectives

To stop the closure of Phoenix House, protecting the vital service is provides and the jobs of those delivering it.

We need public support to demonstrate to the government that we oppose the closure of Phoenix House and we want to protect the jobs of the highly experienced Phoenix House staff.

Phoenix House is a specialist site which processes claims for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit and compensation for asbestos-related cancer and pneumoconiosis. Many people who use the service are terminally ill.

The staff at Phoenix House, members of PCS union, are hugely knowledgeable about the types of illnesses their claimants have, and how the compensation schemes they apply for work. This expertise does not exist anywhere else in the DWP.

But the government has decided to close Phoenix House and outsource these specialist claims to other sites. Already claimants are seeing major delays and a lack of understanding as new claims are handled elsewhere.

We oppose the closure of the office and believe the knowledge and experience DWP has invested in should be retained.
