About this resource

If you're a union rep, you need time off during work hours to represent and support members – that's a right. But a good facility time agreement will build on this entitlement and ensure you really get the time you need – benefitting members and your employer too.

And to make sure you get a good agreement you've got to be ready to justify it, defend it, and negotiate it.

Who is this interactive guide for?

This guide is for union reps. It looks at why the issue of facility time is such an important one for union representatives.

How will it help me?

  • examines why facility time was introduced and why it is now under threat
  • explains the benefits of facility time for both employees and employers
  • describes how union reps can negotiate an effective facility time agreement.

How do I complete it?

All you need is an internet-enabled mobile device (a phone or tablet) or a computer. Do as little or as much as you like each time you log on — your progress will always be saved. Next time you log on just pick up where you left off, this one will take you about 15-45 minutes to complete.

Upon completion of this module, you will receive a digital credential as proof that you have done this e-learning. You will receive this via email (from the TUC via Acclaim), so please keep a look out for it.

What is a digital credential?

A digital credential is evidence that you have completed this piece of e-learning. You can share your credential with your union colleagues or employer to show them what you know.
