Overview

TUC Cymru’s Young Activist Development Programme and TUC South West’s Young Organisers Network are excited to invite you to join our joint 2-day event for Young Workers Month.

Following the pilot of the Norwegian Summer Patrols in both Wales and the South West, we are inviting young trade union activists to get together from both sides of the border and speak to young workers in hospitality and retail about their rights and work.

Our 2-day event will include:

  • Participating in 2 patrol sessions, where in groups you will enter workplaces and interview young people about their experiences of work. We’ll start off in Bristol and travel to Cardiff the following day.
  • Workshops, networking, and socials with young trade union activists across Wales and the South West.

Training will be provided, so you don’t need to have participated in Newid or a patrol before.

Transport between Bristol and Cardiff will be arranged for participants.

Food will also be included as part of the itinerary.

Location: Cardiff/Bristol

Date:  23rd & 24th November 2024

Plus initial team building activity on 22nd Nov.

Please speak to your union about funding and release.

About Newid/Patrols

In Summer 2023/24, a number of young trade union delegates from the UK were invited to attend the Norwegian Summer Patrol to understand how Norwegian trade unions organise young trade union activists.

The LO Summer Patrol is an annual campaign in Norway that organises and trains young trade union members to go out into workplaces and speak to young people about their rights at work. The patrols take place on an annual basis and have taken place for over 40 years.

Following the ongoing partnership and support of the Norwegian LO, a number of regions and Wales in the UK have gone on to set up their own versions of the Norwegian Summer patrol.

In 2023, the TUC Cymru Young Activist Development Programme launched Newid! An activity seeking to reach young workers in non-unionised workplaces. Newid uses the campaign activity to identify trends in young workers experience, shape ongoing campaigns and speak to young workers about the work of trade unions.
