Second workshop

The first workshop was held in Great Yarmouth, the second will be held in London, and the final one in the East of England

The workshop is free to attend and will be held at Congress House, Great Russell Street, in London on Tuesday 21 March between 3 and 7pm. Refreshments, and English/Portuguese interpretation will be provided

The workshop will be informal, presented by a trade union tutor, and with the participation of trade union officials from the CGTP, Portugal’s most influential trade union confederation, and SERTUC, the TUC region covering London, the South East and the East of England

Participants will be asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire on their experiences working in the UK and the results of these will be used to develop strategies and tools that will help migrant workers organise and improve their working lives in the UK

The workshop will cover

  • Overview about the problems and challenges faced by migrant workers in workplaces
  • The importance of participation at work as a tool for better integration
  • The importance of unionisation and workers’ representation as a tool to improve workers’ lives at work and in society
  • Mechanisms of participation in unions and in workplaces
  • Labour and social EU rights (Directives, European Social Charter, British legislation etc)
  • Contacts of trade unions, public authorities and other organisations able to help and support migrant workers

The impact of the vote in the Referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Community will be a key thread through the session
