embargo: For immediate release

The TUC has today (Monday) called on the government to 'come clean' about its new disability benefit changes.

Responding to a speech by the minister for disabled people Esther McVeigh, who claimed that new Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will be more effective than the Disability Living Allowance (DLA), TUC General Secretary Frances O'Grady said:

'The government is cynically trying to present these new changes to disability benefits as fair and progressive when they are the complete opposite.

'We know that ministers want to cut disability payments by 20 per cent and the Personal Independence Payment is their way of achieving this.

'The government should come clean about why it is making these reforms instead of trying to spin them as good news.'
