The TUC will today (Thursday) call for a better pensions deal for women at its annual Pensions Conference in London.

The event, entitled “Freedom pass: where now for workplace pensions?”, will be attended by leading figures in the pensions world and feature a keynote address from Baroness Ros Altmann, Minister of State for Pensions.

TUC Assistant General Secretary Kay Carberry will tell the conference:

“Great strides have been made in bringing five million more people into workplace pensions in recent years. But millions of others – most of them women and many of them part-time workers – are being excluded from this pensions revolution.

“They don’t earn enough to qualify for automatic enrolment under the current rules, which in turn means they miss out on the employer contributions received by their higher-paid colleagues.

“We need urgent reform to ensure that pensions are for all people – not merely the preserve of men in traditional full-time work.”

Others speakers at the conference include Owen Smith MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Works and Pensions; Steve Webb, former Pensions Minister; Otto Thoresen, Chair of the National Employment Savings Trust, (NEST); Andrew Warwick-Thompson, Executive Director of The Pensions Regulator and Daniela Silcock, Head of Policy Research at the Pensions Policy Institute.

The annual event will run from 9am until 4.30pm and will include panel sessions and workshops on subjects including the controversial ‘pension freedom’ reforms and the automatic enrolment of workers into company pension schemes.
