WHY A CHARTER FOR RACIAL JUSTICE IN EDUCATION
Why a Charter?
Despite many years of equality legislation, racism in education still limits opportunities for many. The Charter brings together the longstanding concerns of parents, students, teachers, academics and the wider community and acts as a set of demands for educational institutions.
How can we use the Charter?
We hope that the Charter will encourage local campaigns to make education accountable. We suggest the following as possible early actions by local campaigns:
What do we want to achieve?
Schools, colleges and universities want to show that they have good relations with the local community. They also consider local communities to be an important ‘market’ for pupils and students. We want to use the Charter to change the terms of the conversation between educational institutions and communities. We should use lobbying, publicity and local alliances to shame institutions that refuse to challenge racism. Our communities value education – but we also value the safety and well-being of our young people. Educational institutions which seek our participation should be accountable to the community and able to demonstrate that they are working to achieve racial justice.
