13th TUC Black Workers' Conference - Eastbourne
Some 300 delegates will be in Eastbourne from Friday 7 to Sunday 9 April for this year's TUC Black Workers' Conference, which is being held under the slogan 'Working Against Racism'.
Delegates will debate motions dealing with a wide range of employment issues affecting black workers ranging from the New Equality Act and its implications to more detailed sectoral and industrial problems.
A special joint informal session with the Equal Opportunities Commission will discuss the issue of black women and employment. Delegates will consider union actions to tackle workplace the double discrimination faced by black women in the workplace. The TUC will be re-launching an updated version of the TUC Black Workers' Charter and delegates will have the opportunity to discuss in workshops strategies to implement the charter.
Guest speakers at the conference include: TUC General Secretary, Brendan Barber and Gloria Mils, President; they will be joined by Jenny Watson, Chair of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Kamuljeet Jandu, London Commissioner for the Commission for Racial Equality, and Hernando Hernandez the Human Rights Officer for FENSUAGRO - the Colombian Agricultural Workers' Union . Conference will also hear from Michael Abatan, from the Justice for Jay Campaign.
Conference takes place at the Floral Hall, Eastbourne between Friday 7 April and Sunday 9 April. Session times: Friday 2pm - 5.30pm; Saturday 9.30am - 5.30pm; Sunday from 9.15am.
