Responding to the launch of a consultation by the government today (Wednesday) to allow shops to open for longer on Sundays, TUC Assistant General Secretary Paul Nowak said:

“Increasing Sunday trading hours for major retailers would take vital family time away from shop workers. Consumers are not pushing for longer Sunday shopping hours and any extension of current trading time may push some smaller retailers out of business.

“Increasing Sunday trading hours for major retailers would take vital family time away from shop workers. Consumers are not pushing for longer Sunday shopping hours and any extension of current trading time may push some smaller retailers out of business.

“The Chancellor should focus on delivering stronger growth across different industries, rather than asking people to spend another day of the week putting debt on their credit cards.

“Shop assistants who are worried about having to work longer hours should join a union, so that their voice is heard and their interests are properly represented.”
