The TUC has today (Monday) welcomed the call by US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew for European countries to ease off austerity measures and adopt more growth-friendly policies.

TUC General Secretary Frances O'Grady said: 'This is a very timely call from the US Treasury that George Osborne should urgently take notice of. Self-defeating austerity policies in the UK and other European countries have suffocated growth and led to the biggest squeeze on living standards in a generation.

'Our government needs to change course and recognise the importance of investing in growth. Further spending cuts will only add to the pressure being felt by families and will prevent the recovery from taking hold.'
