Commenting on analysis published today (Wednesday) by the Office for National Statistics, which shows a large gap in life expectancy between children born in richer and poorer areas, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“There remains a shocking life expectancy divide across England and Wales with a stark North-South split.

“This postcode lottery means that people from wealthier areas, such as the Chilterns and Kensington and Chelsea, can expect to receive tens of thousands of pounds more in state pension during their retirement than those from Blackpool and Middlesbrough.

“Ministers need to realise that further rises in the state pension age risk making these inequalities worse.”
