embargo: For immediate release

Commenting on reports today (Monday) that the government is planning to overhaul the state pension and could raise it to £140 a week, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:

'This is an interesting idea that could particularly benefit women, but the devil will be in the detail.

'Some reports this morning suggest that everyone gains and that the new system will cost less, but unfortunately both cannot be true. The real test will be not just who gains, but who loses.'
