Making Up Lost Ground On Pay: TUC-IDS Pay Forum 2015

The annual conference on pay bargaining was held on 12 February 2015 at Congress House and organised by the TUC and Incomes Data Services. The event discussed opportunities for restoring members' pay levels where these have fallen behind in recent years. Sessions covered recent union success stories, pay transparency and benchmarking pay, pay progression in the private sector and the living wage and minimum wage.

The conference was chaired by Gail Cartmail, Unite and speakers included:
• Paul Nowak, TUC;
• Ken Mulkearn, IDS on current and possible future trends on pay;
• Nicola Smith, TUC on key economic and labour market developments;
• Dominic Hook, National Officer, Unite on the Barclays deal; Sara Gorton, Senior National Officer, UNISON on the NHS pay campaign and Michael MacNeil, National Head of Bargaining and Negotiations for UCU on the college lecturers' deal;
• Ray Storry, IDS on sources of information on pay and union speaker on drawing up a pay claim; Richard Exell, TUC on inflation and pay bargaining in 2015;
• Louisa Withers, IDS on progression in private sector; Fiona Wilson, Head of Research and Economics, USDAW and supervisors' pay in retail and Steve Jarry, National Secretary, Prospect on engineers and managers' pay;
• Tony Lennon, BECTU involved in Living Wage campaign at Picture House; Tim Butcher, Chief Economist and Deputy Secretary, Low Pay Commission and Councillor Richard Livingstone, Southwark council cabinet member for housing on implementing the Living Wage; and
• Tony Burke, Assistant General Secretary, Unite.
