Commenting on new ONS data published today (Friday), which show declines in manufacturing and construction for the period March to May, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“Economic growth is already weak, and today’s poor results for manufacturing and construction are fresh cause for concern.

“With investment low, and disposable income falling, it’s hard to see where the impetus for stronger growth will come from without government action.

“The government’s industrial strategy must be backed by a major boost to public investment, including vital infrastructure like transport and broadband. And we need urgent action to give public servants and minimum wage workers a pay rise. This will put more spending power into family purses, which will help boost growth.”
