Unions announce plans for TUC Young Workers Month

BECTU

  • running  networking events at the National Theater on London's Southbank
  • running a reduced subs rate for new entrants to the industry plus a young member recruitment drive
  • taking part in the joint Federation of Entertainment Unions event, this will include Pitching & Negotiating on Nov 27th  ,will also include a social-  'get to know your union' event
  • holding a Housing Campaign group meeting-  Nov 22nd 11:30am, London, Congress House  

CWU

  • Announcing new  plans for mentoring of young  representatives following  a vigorous debate at  the CWU’s Annual Conference  earlier in the year;
  • National  Postal Executive Committee  will convene in special session  with  youth activists  to  discuss and agree how the former can support the latter;
  • A union-wide survey  of young members will take place  to   identify their key issues of concern
  • A revised and expanded "how to" guide for senior, older branch officers will be  published,  to help them  engage effectively with young members;
  • Systematic region-by-region survey  work  to identify  new young activists will continue
  • New youth orientated recruitment literature will be  launched, and a competition  to  design  a  new  youth-engagement poster will take place;
  • Fully participating in  events organised by the TUC YWF  including the Big Youth Debate on  15 November,  including (hopefully)  a new podcast on YWM  by Fern on the website  www.cwuyouth.org

The output  from the  month  will be  formalised in a series of  binding  policy  motions  to be submitted to the union’s Youth and  General  Conferences in spring  2015. The success of the month and other  initiatives will be measured   by visibly increased participation by young members  at all levels in the union.

Equity

  • running a twitter competition.
  • dinner at Joe Allen, tickets to West End show, £100 of Bloch Dance vouchers and loads more.
  • Federation of Entertainment Unions are running a workshop on negotiation skills for freelancers. 
  • Equity will be running a workshop for young members on 'knowing your rights at work' and 'how to get more involved in your union'. 
  • ‘Equity guide for Young Members’ will be ready to launch by November 1st 
  • a number of student talks arranged for November, where young members will be going to various performing arts institutions and speaking about the union

GMB

  • GMB Young London are having a demonstration outside parliament on Monday 24 November from 6pm. This is regarding "Revenge Evictions" and a new bill being proposed stop landlords evicting people for no reason (usually after they've complained about something)
  • GMB Scotland will be publishing a video this weekend including delegates to GMB Scotland REF Conference to send a message about young workers. This will be published online and on social media for other regions to share.
  • GMB Yorkshire and North Derbyshire Young members AGM on the saturday the 8th November in Wakefield (travel will be reimbursed.) For more details follow this link
  • GMB Yorkshire and North Derbyshire: In support of living wage week GMB young members are invited to the Uni of Sheffield living wage campaigns free screening of  the Documentary film 'Waging a Living in London' in the Arts Tower Lecture Theatre 9 at 5:30pm on Tuesday 4th November.​
  • GMB NATIONAL YOUNG MEMBERS SUMMIT: SATURDAY 22nd - SUNDAY 23rd NOVEMBER 2014. The event will take place at Leeds Council Chamber, Calverley Street, Leeds LS1 1UR and will provide delegates with the opportunity to attend training workshops, hear from GMB Young Members Representatives, stand for elections and a number of key speakers.

Nautilus

  • Events based around the campaign ‘protect and respect’
  • A series of recruitment drives at Maritime Colleges
  • Setting up a mentoring support scheme for young workers

NUJ

  • A young members conference
  • Training sessions aimed at young members,
  • A series of networking events across regions,
  • A discounted membership rate for young people,
  • Raising the age qualification to 30,
  • Setting up a young members committee​

NUT

  • Running a special NUT Chat (@nutchatter) on Sunday 9th November about Young Teachers' issues.
  • Organising a twitter chat with teachers from across the regions tweeting about the main issues of: jobs, housing and having a voice, plus showing their support for young workers month throughout November.
  • South Gloucestershire Division will be holding a Young Teachers' Weekend on 28th and 29th November and will be tweeting using the TUC and NUT hashtags throughout.
  • Holding a course for Young Teacher Officers at our National Training Centre near Grantham at the end of November.
  • Sending a delegation to the Big TUC Youth Debate.

PCS

  • Ongoing action aimed at switching young members to direct debit
  • Regional young members training sessions
  • Recruitment material for young workers
  • A national political education event
  • A new Charter for Young Members

Prospect

Prospect will hold their first Young Members Forum on Sunday 23rd and Monday 24th November.
Key discussion points for the event will include:

  • Discuss & respond to draft Prospect Young Members Strategy and Motion from National Conference.
  • Discuss and highlight Prospect training needs for young members.
  • Promote what we need to do to get branches to engage on young people.
  • Ideas on how to promote Prospect membership and activity with young people
  • Promoting a network of Branch based YPN’s.
  • Propose a Prospect Young Members social media strategy.

Prospect will launch its youth committee. There will be 8 places on the committee and 4 officer roles:

  • Secretary: To prepare/distribute agendas and minutes of previous meetings.
  • Chairperson: To chair meetings and ensure that they run to time and that the agenda is followed.
  • Vice Chairperson: To take the role of the Chair in their absence.
  • Communications Officer: To be involved in the running of the YPN Facebook, Twitter and other social media accounts.

TSSA

  • FutureTSSA are holding a music night in Liverpool on a Saturday during YWM to coincide with the YM AGM. 

UCU

  •          Urging every branch to ‘recruit a young member in November’
  •          Writing to all young members, asking them to share their experiences of low pay and casualisation in the workplace
  •          Raising awareness of our CPD programme which features many resources useful for early career workers
  •          Running our annual Anti-casualisation day of action, highlighting the issues faced the issues faced by so many young workers in further and higher education

UNISON

  • ‘Ribbon’ recruitment/profile-raising campaign
  • Workplace Living Wage and electoral registration stalls
  • Trade Unions and Young People workshop Lancaster University
  • Focus on apprentice recruitment –more info
  • Social media focus on pay, minimum wage, living wage
  • Leaflet on the trade union premium for young workers
  • Possible Parliamentary visit around living wage

Unite

  • Running a national political school in Esher.
  • In the North East they are holding two events, one on the 2nd November and one on the 8th both are Open Forums on “Back to basics” -information about trade unions.
  • National young members have done a mapping exercise of young members
  • Launching a young members website
  • Commissioned a young members banner for use on union marches.
  • Film night on 14th November at Unite House Holborn, London

USDAW

  • A promotional Young Workers’ campaign in the city centre of Plymouth, (i.e. leafleting, raising awareness with members of the public etc).
  • The South Wales and Western Divisional Young Workers Committee plans to run a 1 day Young Workers' promotional campaign in their respective workplaces, potentially to also raise awareness within the communities they live in.
  • A recruitment drive at Primark Marble Arch, which has a young workforce.
  • A presentation followed by a workshop at Eastern Divisional Conference around engaging young workers.
  • Retail campaigns in the East and West of Scotland around young workers.
  • Mental Health campaigns – an area in which employers are often unsupportive particularly with young workers.
  • The North West Divisional Young Workers’ Committee will be carrying out an awareness day at Morrisons Manufacturing site at Gadbrooke Park around engaging young workers within Usdaw.
  • Leafleting in Hull city centre and Hull College – promoting the work of the Young Workers Committee and recruiting new members.
  • Campaign days in Tesco across the North East division raising awareness about the issues that young workers’ face.
  • Running a stall at Hull University, providing union literature.
