What Can Public Policy Do To Encourage (Or Discourage) Social Mobility? TUC Event - Tuesday, 13 May 2014

Issue date

Everyone agrees that more social mobility would be a good thing and that Britain does not have enough of it. International comparisons suggest that more unequal countries have less social mobility - at the same time as Britain seems headed for less redistribution and widening income and wealth gaps. So what can governments do to influence the prospects for coming generations? Can education or labour market policy make a difference? How much does inequality really matter? These issues were debated at the seminar.

The event also launched our report Dismantling the Barriers to Social Mobility , a report written for the TUC by Ben Baumberg  and Declan Gaffney. This report takes a new look at the connections between inequality and social mobility and the consequences for individuals of a world with less social mobility and more inequality
