The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has today (Thursday) formally become an affiliate to the TUC. The RCM is now the first Royal College to be a member of the TUC. The decision was made yesterday by the TUC General Council.

TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“We are delighted that the RCM has taken the historic step of becoming the newest member of the TUC. The TUC family is proud that we can now claim to look after working people from cradle to grave.

“The trade union movement takes its strength from its members, and we look forward to working more closely with them. Membership of the TUC brings substantial benefits from both an employer relations and professional perspective – opening up additional opportunities for collaborative working.

“Together with our other affiliates, we will continue to defend and champion our NHS and public services, which are the bedrock of a strong economy and a just society. Leadership and support in the public sector will be crucial in the coming years, as will campaigning on equality and women’s rights. All unions have a very important role to play.”

Cathy Warwick, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Midwives, said: “This is wonderful news and we are delighted to be affiliated to the TUC. This is a positive step and is important to us not only from the union perspective but also for the RCM’s professional work. It will bring many benefits to the RCM, but most importantly to our members, such as access to an even wider range of educational, learning and training opportunities.

“I look forward to an exciting and fruitful future with the TUC and its member organisations.”
