A formal application is being made by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) to affiliate to the TUC.

The announcement follows a decision by the RCM’s governing board to apply for membership. If successful, the RCM will be the first Royal College to be a member of the TUC.

TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said: “We are delighted that the RCM is to take the historic step of seeking to become the newest member of the TUC.

“Our movement derives its strength from its members, and we look forward to working more closely with such a strong and professional body as the RCM.

“Together with our other affiliates, we will continue to defend and champion our NHS and public services, which are the bedrock to a strong economy and a just society. Leadership and support in the public sector will be crucial in the coming years, as will campaigning on equality and women’s rights. All unions have a very important role to play.”

Cathy Warwick, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Midwives, said: “This is a significant, historical and positive decision by the RCM. Membership of the TUC will bring substantial benefits to our members from both an employment relations and professional perspective.

“It will enable us to contribute even more to the joint activities of colleagues from within the TUC. It also offers our members access to a wide range of education, learning and training opportunities.

“This is a natural progression for the RCM. Most importantly it will enhance what we can offer to our members; and through opening up additional opportunities for collaborative working it will make the RCM a stronger and a more effective organisation.”
