As part of the Committee on the Application of Standards’ consideration of the UK Trade Union Act 2016, Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions President George Nkiwane made the following speech:

Madam Chair,

On behalf of the workers of Zimbabwe, I would like to express my serious concern over the recent changes made to the legislation in the United Kingdom with regard to the right to freedom of association and the unavoidable implications this will have on workers.

We are shocked to see that the government of the UK now started to adopt the same strategies as the government of Zimbabwe in order to crush the voice of workers.

When I look at the Trade Union Act I see provisions that we are very familiar with in Zimbabwe, provisions which have contributed to mass violence and economic downfall....
