date: Thursday 29 July 2004 embargo: Immediate release |
Commenting on official figures published today (Thursday) showing a four per cent increase in the number of deaths at work to 235 in 2003/04, Brendan Barber, TUC General Secretary, said:
'The government committed itself to achieving a five per cent decrease in the number of deaths at work between 2000 and 2004. Instead deaths have increased again this year. If the government is serious about reducing the levels of deaths and injuries it must increase the resources available to local authorities and the Health and Safety Commission for enforcing health and safety law.
'It is also imperative that the government legislates for new health and safety duties for directors and makes good its commitment to introduce a new offence of corporate killing.'
The TUC has also asked for urgent action to address the health and safety risks to migrant workers following the tragedy in Morecambe Bay.
