date: 29 April 2004 embargo: For immediate release |
Reacting to an announcement by transport minister David Jamieson earlier today (Thursday) about how working time rules are to apply from next year to HGV and coach drivers, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:
"We welcome the news that at long last drivers of heavy goods and passenger vehicles are to get protection from working excessive hours. Tired drivers are a hazard to themselves and other road users and the new regulations will have a positive impact upon the UK's road safety record.
"It's also good news that the regulations are to be drafted in such a way so as to allow unions to change the detail by working closely with individual companies to draw up agreements that suit both drivers and employers."
