Union rep gets posthumous anti-violence award

Issue date

An FBU rep who died last year has been given a posthumous award for her work tackling violence in the workplace. The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) welcomed the decision by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust to recognise the campaigning work undertaken by Linda Shanahan, who succumbed to cancer in September 2011. Grahame Smith, STUC general secretary, said: 'Linda, who was a long standing trade union activist in the FBU, a former member of the STUC general council and former chair of the STUC women's committee always appreciated the support and encouragement she received from the trust as she took forward her work to tackle work related violence in Scottish workplaces.' He added: 'Linda was initially seconded to the Scottish government in early 2004 for a period of 12 weeks, that subsequently turned out to be five years, a mark of regard that both the STUC and the Scottish government had for the work that Linda undertook bringing unions and employers together across public and private sectors to tackle the real challenge that workers providing services to the public face as a result of verbal and physical abuse. It came as no great surprise to the STUC that she accepted the challenge with the same vigour and enthusiasm as she had for life and her many other campaigns. Whether it was promoting equality for women, tackling domestic violence or raising money to buy a tractor for a community in South Africa, nothing or no one could stop her achieving her aims.'
