Hard Times: Trade unions tackling poverty

3 September 2008 - 5:30pm to 7:30pm (buffet from 5pm)

Keynote speakers:

Sharon Hodgson MP

Clare Williams - Unison

Hilary Fisher - End Child Poverty Campaign

Venue: Northern TUC Offices, Commercial Union House, 5th Floor, 39 Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 6QE

The northern region endures more than its fair share of poverty. Deprivation is higher here than in any other part of the country outside London, affecting life chances, health and wellbeing,

educational attainment and dragging down quality of life. Poverty is directly related to low wages, vulnerable working and inequality in the workplace - this makes tackling poverty a trade union issue. More workers in the north are low paid, especially growing. Inequalty and low pay at work

means children and families living in poverty in this region. This seminar will help to inform and shape trade unions' actions in the workplace that will tackle poverty in the community.
