TUC hosts internet conference

A conference on ‘unions and the internet’ is to be held by the TUC at Congress House on May 12 2001.

The conference will ask how unions can use the internet more effectively and whether the internet will change the way unions work.

A link up with the Centre for Economic Performance at the LSE will mean that speakers from around the world will be able to participate in the conference as they have attended a symposium the day before.

Sessions at the conference will include:

• what the internet will mean for unions

• how union services can be delivered via the internet

• how the internet can help build international links

• what makes a good union web site

• campaigning using the internet- and how the internet was used during the election campaign (assuming a May 3 election)

• Speakers at the conference are still being confirmed. More details of the conference are available from www.tuc.org.uk/internetconference. Delegates from unions can attend for £20 and others for £50.

• Nigel Stanley, Head of Campaigns and Communications at the TUC, said,'The internet is a powerful medium. Many unions are already making effective use of it, but its importance can only grow. This is an opportunity for union decision makers to share best practice with colleagues from home and abroad, and think through some of the long term challenges the net poses to us.'
