St George's Day is a great day to celebrate what's good about our country. We have strong and diverse communities in which people from all backgrounds contribute to making our society stronger.
We know that the overwhelming majority of people in the North East judge people by who they are and not the colour of their skin. Our public services, communities, business and sports teams are all stronger for tackling racism and discrimination and judging people on their merits.
Sadly there will always be a tiny minority of people cynically trying to exploit situations for their own ends. The North East has repeatedly rejected those seeking to stir up hate and division against our region's ethnic minorities and we remain a BNP-free zone. More recently the violent, racist and criminal behaviour of the English Defence league threatens towns and cities.
We know our work against racism and discrimination is ongoing. On St George's Day, we proudly stand together united in building a fairer and more equal society for all.
St George - the world's original defender of tolerance and multiculturalism. Download a copy of the full leaflet here and join us at the Monument in Newcastle City Centre for a day of music and celebration on Saturday 21st April from 11am.
Around 2000 trade unionists, community groups and public services campaigners assembled to protest against the Liberal Democrats at their Spring Conference in Gateshead last weekend. Speakers from trade unions, Keep Our NHS Public, the Lawnmowers Community Group and Remploy were joined by local Labour MPs Dave Anderson and Ian Mearns to condemn the LibDem role in pushing through the deeply unpopular Health and Social Care Bill, attacks on people dependent on welfare benefits, cuts to public services and their failure to support alternatives to austerity.

Regional Secretary, Kevin Rowan, said, "This was a fantastic turn out and a real demonstration of the anger and frustration at the role the Liberal Democrats are playing in supporting the most right-wing government agenda that we've seen in recent history. This coalition government are dissembling the very fabric of what makes our society and community function well, the NHS, the welfare state, decent comprehensive education, support for young and quality jobs with decent employment rights. The general public will not forgive the Liberal Democrats for this collaboration of destruction."
