This section of our web site reproduces the text of that book. It has only been very lightly edited to bring some of the text into the house style we use in the TUC web site. Some of the judgements made in the text may not have stood the test of time. The world looked very different in 1968 compared to the early years of the twenty first century.
However it contains a wealth of historical material that is not available elsewhere. There is no book in print that deals with the history of the TUC from its formation to the present day, although Robert Taylors The TUC - from the General Strike to New Unionism is a well received account of its more recent history told through chapters on the movements leading personalities. It can be ordered from TUC publications.
We have not included much of the pictorial material which was a central feature of the original publication, partly for copyright reasons and partly because it would slow down the pages too much.
