The TUC in Brighton - September 1999

Amongst the speakers at the 131st Trades Union Congress in Brighton will be Trade and Industry Secretary Stephen Byers, Secretary of State for International Development, Clare Short, plus other senior ministers to be confirmed.

Under the banner Partners at Work, the main conference themes for this year are partnership, equal rights, young people and trade unions, Europe, and the economy. Congress will also look at the recommendations from the TUC's millennial challenge paper which proposes a new structure for the trade union movement as the 21st century approaches.

Other speakers over the four days include: Baroness Jay, Minister for Women, Herman Ouseley, Chair of the Commission for Racial Equality; Bill Jordan, General Secretary of the International Federation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU), new ILO Director General, Juan Somavio, and Emilio Gabaglio, General Secretary of the ETUC. John Monks, TUC General Secretary will address conference on Monday morning.

The preliminary agenda will be available to journalists from 2 August and the final agenda hits the streets on 25 August.
