DayMer 25th Culture and Arts Festival 2014

Issue date

Daymer 1

Day-Mer Festival is a vital cultural contribution of migrant communities to North London. On Sunday 6 July 2014, Day-Mer celebrated its 25th Arts and Cultural Festival. The migrant communities from mainland Turkey, especially Day-Mer members, have contributed greatly to the continuity and growth of the 25 year-old festival. An estimated 20,000 people were in attendance.

Organisers expressed their gratitude to SERTUC, TUC and all unions who have been working in solidarity with the Turkish and Kurdish community and continue to support the festival and communities. In her speech, Asli Gul, Day-Mer Chair, stressed the need for a joint struggle with brothers and sisters from different communities.

The festival is a beacon for the trade union movement in the UK and guest speakers included Megan Dobney, SERTUC Regional Secretary; who spoke alongside Jeremy Corbyn, Labour MP Islington; Mohammad Taj,  TUC President and Chris Baugh, PCS Assistant General Secretary.

Local volunteers, members of the community and visitors have embraced the festival as their own and cherish both diversity and the universal values that build bridges between cultures. The festival staged dancers and musicians, not only known for their creative but also their commitment to justice and equality.

Day-Mer Festival takes pride in advocating solidarity between communities from all backgrounds, and is part of Day-Mer’s broader campaign to support migrant communities whilst also eliminating the superficial divide between the migrant and non-migrant people in the UK.
